Dr. Henry Palmer

When the Civil War broke out, Dr. Henry Palmer served as company surgeon for the 7
th Wisconsin Infantry. He moved quickly through the ranks and was soon put in charge of a military hospital in
York.
During the Confederate occupation of York in 1863, Palmer was taken prisoner but managed to escape and treat wounded Union soldiers at
Gettysburg. He returned to York after the Battle of Gettysburg and continued to treat wounded Union soldiers at the hospital.
