Eby Byers, along with John B. Smith, established a Soldiers’ Rest Home in Harrisburg. It was designed to be a home where recently discharged soldiers could rest for a few days as they made their way back home. It was also where food and clothing were provided for the soldiers.

The Soldiers’ Rest Home was proud of its immaculate appearance—a welcome sight for soldiers just returning from battle.
