Mechanicsburg, PA
George Zacharias was the railroad stationmaster in Mechanicsburg, a community that owes its early prominence, in part, to the Cumberland Valley Railroad. In 1863, a home was built for Zacharias and his family to live along the passenger and freight line and run the telegraph service.
History states that telegraph stations along the Cumberland Valley Railroad received the messages from Robert E. Lee’s camp for his troops to turn back to Gettysburg.
