Private James Shirk
1844 – 1913
Shippensburg, PA
Shippensburg resident James Shirk served with the 55
th Massachusetts Infantry. The regiment saw service in Florida and South Carolina during the Civil War. His brother John perished while serving in the famed 54
th Massachusetts, a sister unit.
James suffered a back injury in battle that landed him in a field hospital, but he was able to heal and return to his regiment. He was discharged from the military on October 25, 1865.
