Thaddeus Stevens Rep. Thaddeus Stevens
1792 – 1868
Pennsylvania & Washington, D.C.

Avid abolitionist and one of Lancaster’s most prominent citizens, Thaddeus Stevens served in the U.S. House of Representatives. His legacy is the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments, which serve as the basis for all civil rights legislation. Throughout his career, Stevens provided legal assistance to abolitionist causes, headed the congressional finance committee to award Lincoln’s war budgets and assisted the Freedmen’s Bureau, an early effort of Reconstruction. Stevens and his housekeeper, Lydia Hamilton Smith, also served as conductors in the Underground Railroad.

During his lifetime, Stevens lived in York, Chambersburg, Lancaster and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
